In Spring 2007, I studied abroad in Uganda with the School for International Training. For the first 8 weeks of the semester, I was studying development with a group of 24 US students. Our curriculum was designed to include lectures from Makerere University faculty and traveling excursions to eastern Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda. The final 6 weeks of the semester was designed for independent study or internship. I spent this time researching women's political roles. Overall, despite the cliche, my experiences in Uganda were life changing. East Africa is a beautiful place to live and learn. The people are as diverse and friendly as their culture. This summer I am heading back, this time to South Africa, and I cannot wait to continue broadening my view of the African continent.

In my four years here at ASU, I have had the privilege of studying abroad twice. The first trip I took was with a faculty-led summer exchange program in France. Our group of about 15 students and one professor spent three weeks in Paris and one week in Angers taking intensive language courses as well as getting to know the French culture. The trip went by too fast and when I returned home I knew that I wanted to go again. Only this time I knew I had to stay longer. So, I spent my junior year studying at the Université d'Angers in Angers, France. Over the course of those nine months I was able to travel extensively through both France and Europe. I was also able to meet many new people, many of which I still keep in touch with. As my time in France progressed, so did my language and my understanding of the French culture. Traveling is and always has been one of my greatest passions in life and studying abroad allowed me to do this while earning credit for the courses I took in France. If I could go back and relive my last four years of college I would only change one thing. I would have studied abroad at least three times!

I spent the year of 2007 studying abroad in Valparaiso, Chile at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. Both semesters were spent in classes with Chilean students, studying material just like what I would here at ASU. Being so immersed into the university forced me to focus on my Spanish and get to know my Chilean classmates. Valparaiso is an incredible coast town that is home to one of the largest ports in South America. The history and culture of the town was a perfect setting for me to encompass a better experience than I could have ever imagined. My time abroad helped me to grow in a variety of ways that will help me the rest of my life. Studying in a different country not only gives you the opportunity to explore a different culture or language, but to learn skills that will be used in future jobs and life situations. Aside from that, I have to mention the joy I got from traveling all over South America. I had the chance to see a range of sites all the way from Machu Picchu, to trekking way back into the Patagonia. I would encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunities to study abroad through ASU
